“The Wake of Monaco”

Offroad Club Monaco International Workshop: Heritage, Environment, Sports, and Innovation in the Mediterranean

IN THE PRINCIPALITY, THE OFFROAD CLUB MONACO BROUGHT TOGETHER ACADEMIC, INSTITUTIONAL, AND SPORTS LEADERS FROM THE MEDITERRANEAN REGION FOR AN INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP. O.C.M. CEO Massimiliano Mordenti opened the conference and introduced the event by presenting the founding values of the Offroad Club Monaco and explaining the concept of The Wake of Monaco.

On a sunny day, in a magical setting where the blue of the sea blends with the mosaics and late-19th-century architecture—namely, the Oceanographic Museum of Monaco—professors, dignitaries, organizing staff, sponsors, and a large audience, all with a strong off-road spirit, gathered to bring to life a unique event that will be talked about for a long time to come because of the lasting impression it left. On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, the Principality of Monaco hosted an international scientific and cultural workshop featuring social, business, and sporting interactions, organized by the Offroad Club Monaco (O.C.M.) through its Permanent Academic and Scientific Committee, coordinated by Prof. Andrea Carteny (Professor at La Sapienza University of Rome).

The event, titled “Historical Legacy, Cultural Traditions, and Environmental Heritage of the Mediterranean: From the Founding of the Principality of Monaco to the Sporting and Technological Challenges of Today,” brought together a large number of participants from across the Mediterranean region.

Objectives and Sponsorship

The event, held under the patronage of the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the Italian Embassy in Monaco, in collaboration with the Municipality of Monaco, aimed to explore the interplay between historical and cultural heritage, respect for the environment, the value of outdoor sports, innovation, the economy, and social commitment. The goal was to foster dialogue and the sharing of experiences among experts, institutional and business representatives, athletes, and academics, promoting the values of the Monaco Offroad Club—which align with Monaco’s own values—to set an example that demonstrates their importance to the rest of the world, with a particular focus on the younger generations: Inspiration from heritage, consideration of environmental sustainability, and the promotion of preparation both in sports and in other areas of life.

The Philosophy of “The Wake of Monaco”

The workshop was fully in line with the philosophy of the Offroad Club Monaco, embodied by the concept “The Wake of Monaco.” This philosophy promotes the creation of new routes and adventures starting from Monaco, fueled by interaction among people and a passion for outdoor sports while respecting the environment, drawing inspiration from historical heritage, and always returning to Monaco as a point of reference—a place that the Offroad Club Monaco considers home. The O.C.M. promotes a vision that combines outdoor sports, culture, science, environmental responsibility, and social commitment in keeping with the tradition of exploration.

Testimonials:

Massimiliano Mordenti (CEO and Founder of O.C.M.): He expressed his excitement over the success of the first workshop, highlighting the sharing of authentic experiences and values of the Principality of Monaco (heritage, social, cultural, and sporting commitment, and environmental sustainability) with the aim of passing them on to future generations and promoting a vision of the “sustainable individual.”
Erminia Fezia Mordenti (Co-founder of O.C.M. and Project Manager): She described “The Wake of Monaco” as an act of vision, a trail that begins in Monaco and is enriched through encounters between diverse communities and individuals united by shared values, inspired by pioneers and focused on the academic, sporting, and social analysis of themes central to O.C.M., ranging from Mediterranean history to contemporary challenges. It is the Offroad Club Monaco’s desire to promote a deeper understanding of the values of this workshop shared with Monaco, by embracing Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s quote: “We protect only what we love, and we love only what we know” to achieve the goal of spreading these values internationally and to future generations, inviting them to actively participate, leaving the beaten path behind, to engage in social, sporting, and academic experiences in the “Offroad Club Monaco” style.
Professor Andrea Carteny (Coordinator of the O.C.M. Scientific Committee): He described the workshop as a great success, a moment of enrichment and interdisciplinary dialogue that explored historical and cultural heritage and environmental challenges, with “The Wake of Monaco” serving as the guiding thread for future activities.

Interdisciplinary Program and Future Prospects

The program took an interdisciplinary “off-road” approach to the humanities, environmental awareness, economics, social action, and outdoor sports. The sessions explored the historical, cultural, and environmental dynamics of the Mediterranean, with a focus on:

  • Mediterranean History and Cultural Traditions
  • Environmental Heritage and Biodiversity
  • Exchanges between the shores of the Mediterranean
  • The maritime economy and the assessment of sports performance in relation to environmental protection
  • Sociology, Sports, and Sustainable Innovative Technologies
  • Local and international cultural, economic, and social trends
  • The importance of bringing together people from diverse backgrounds in sports, with the aim of improving the quality of life, while respecting the environment
  • The discipline required to achieve the highest athletic performance, as a code of conduct and ethics, for the attainment of life goals and social support
  • From the value of trust—the foundation upon which money was first established—to today’s modern electronic transactions, which are based on that same value
  • The ocean depicted in gemstones set in ethically sourced gold and protected by the latest technologies designed to remove plastic from it

The event marked a key milestone in the lead-up to the Offroad Club Monaco’s second international workshop, scheduled for 2027–2028, which will focus on the concept ofthe “Sustainable Human”: sustainable in terms of one’s own quality of life and sustainable in relation to the surrounding environment.
